Feed and Speed Change Plugin Tech Tip

 

This plug-in is used to modify the feedrate and/or spindle speed associated with one or more selected operations and is included in the v7.3.6 release on the GibbsCAM website for download by maintenance customers.

 

It can be divided into 3 parts.

 

1 Selection criteria and action. There are a number of selection methods in order to select the operations to modify. What action is to be taken.

 

2 Speed changes. How to change the spindle speed

 

3 Feedrate changes.

 

 

 

There are 3 selection methods:

 

1 Selected operations. Use the currently selected operations.

 

2 Selected tools. Select any operation that is associated with any of the currently selected tools.

 

3 Filter. Use one or more filters to select the operations. These filters are used separately, ie if an operation matches any one of the filters, it is selected, it does not have to meet all filter criteria.

 

Operation type:  any operation of the selected type.

 

Operation range:  any operation within the given op number range.

 

Tool range:  any operation associated with any tool within the given tool number range.

 

Spindle number:  any operation machined in the given spindle number. Not currently implemented, for future use with MTM machines.

 

 

The actions that can be taken is to change feedrate and/or spindle speed for all selected operations. In addition, the new feedrate/speed values can be locked at the operation level, the values for the associated processes can also be updated.

 

A log file is available to view all the changes made. Check the 'log file' option to create a log. If the 'start new log' option is checked, each time the plugin is used, a new log file will be created, otherwise the log data is appended to the current log file.

 

The log file can be viewed from within the plug-in using the 'view log' button.

 

Speed changes

 

The spindle speed changes of the operation and/or associated processes can be modified. The actual values are changed, but the plug-in does not differentiate between RPM and Surface Speed.

 

 

 

Three types of modification are available:

 

1 Edit:  either change all speeds of one given value to another given value (from-to option) or change all speeds to a given value (to option).

 

2 Calculate:  one current method available, recalculate the speed based on the tool associated with the operation and the current material database.

 

3 No change:  do not change the speed at this stage.

 

Once any speed changes have been applied, they can be further modified by:

 

1 Applying a percentage change. In the above example, all speeds will be change to 90% of their current value.

 

2 Min speed:  Any speed less than the given value will be set to this minimum value.

 

3 Max speed:  Any speed greater than the given value will be set to this maximum value.

 

Feedrate changes

 

The feedrate changes of the operation and/or associated processes can be modified. The actual values are changed, but the plug-in does not differentiate between feed per revolution and feed per minute. In addition, the federate along the toolpath may be adjusted using utility markers to effect slow down/speed up into and out of corners.

 

 

Select which feedrates to change. Entry/drill federates and/or Milling feedrates (this would also change turning feedrates). Any existing utility markers can be optionally removed before any feedrate modifications.

 

Three types of modification are available:

 

1 Edit - either change all feedrates of one given value to another given value (from-to option) or change all feedrates to a given value (to option).

 

2 Calculate:  either recalculate to adjust for any new spindle RPM or recalculate the feedrate based on the tool associated with the operation and the current material database.

 

3 No change:  do not change the speed at this stage.

 

Once any feedrate changes have been applied (including any feedrate utility markers), they can be further modified by:

 

1 Applying a percentage change. In the above example, all speeds will be change to 90% of their current value.

 

2 Min speed:  Any speed less than the given value will be set to this minimum value.

 

3 Max speed:  Any speed greater than the given value will be set to this maximum value.
